| The Redan Story | ||
|
The first Ballarat Football game was played at the Copenhagen Grounds on April 27, 1860 - the current Western Oval stands on part of the original site. The first Redan game was reported in The Ballarat Star Saturday September 2, 1871 against the Ballarat Football Club. The Redan team was made up from miners from the Band of Hope mine and their average weight was 14 Stone (90kg). The Star reported that the Redan team were everywhere, kicking and tripping regardless of the consequences. From 1925, Redan played in the U/21 competition and were very successful. In 1943 it joined the BFL as a senior team. In 1946 the BFL was reconstituted and re-formed which saw Redan premiers with Steve Bayly as coach and Stan Webb Captain. A young Keith Rawle from Essendon arrived in 1950 to coach Redan for seven years. In 1952 the team were premiers and champions, a feat only matched by North Ballarat in 1992. In 1953 they made the finals losing only one game for the year before losing to Golden Point in the Grand Final. Redan was a finals team in the 1950's and 1960's but the next success was with John Northey as playing coach in 1975, followed by 1976 and 1977. This was a time of great excitement and success. Northey returned in 1980 and Redan were runners up in 1981. The next taste of finals was in 1984 under the leadership of of David Blackburn when Redan were runners up. Michael Phyland then took the side to the finals in 1992. During the 1980's and 1990's the club failed to capture another flag and by the late 1990's, was struggling for survival. During season 1998, the club were forced to forfeit a game to Darley due to lack of numbers at which time a crisis meeting was called. From that meeting, the Redan Past Players and Officials Association was formed and in conjunction with the board, worked extensively to erase the club's debt and help get the club in order off the field. The 'Save the Lion's' Dinner was held which was the catalyst in driving Redan back from the brink of extinction to head towards a new era of success both on and off the field. The first sign of the club's turnaround occurred when on August 7th 1999, Redan defeated Daylesford by 108 points at the City Oval, it's first win since August 5th 1995. 'Players were mobbed as spectators raced on to the ground to celebrate the long awaited victory' reported The Courier the following Monday. Following the appointment of rookie Coach Brett Quinlan in 2000, the side went on to win its first Premiership in over 20 years when in 2002, Redan won its sixth senior BFL Premiership defeating Sunbury. After the game, the Eastern Oval was swamped with a sea of maroon and gold as the Redan supporters cheered on the players receiving their medals and the Premiership Cup. In 2003, Quinlan managed to guide Redan to back to back flags for the first time since the Northey era again defeating Sunbury to claim the title. In 2006 playing Coach Kieran Murrihy guided Redan to its eighth Premiership over East Point before a crowd of 8,000 spectators at the Eastern Oval. In a season where East Point had dominated the competition to finish on top of the ladder, Redan managed to defeat the Kangaroos on three occasions. The second of these victories was the most dramatic as it involved a kick after the siren goal in the Qualifying Final by Steve Nicholson to give Redan a 3 point win. The following season Redan again tasted Premiership success with an 18 point victory over Sunbury. The win capped off the club's fourth premiership in six seasons and saw Kieran Murrihy go out a dual Redan Premiership Coach. The season also saw Jarrod Edwards win back to back Henderson Medals for the Ballarat Football League Best and Fairest and then in 2008, make it three in a row for the first time in the award's 75 year history. The club has a proud history of 59 premierships (9 Senior Football) and 13 Henderson Medal Winners and in 2004 & 2005 won the prestigious Victorian Country Football League Most Disciplined Club award. A number of Redan players have gone on to VFL/AFL success. Ron Andrews, Essendon captain 1982 and Graham Gellie a St Kilda player and coach. John Northey went on to coach Melbourne, Sydney, Richmond and Brisbane. |

My
initiation to Redan Football Club began in
April 1991 when I received a phone call from new coach Mick Phyland (ex
Sydney Swans) telling me how exciting it was going to be around Redan
Football Club in the coming years and how he would like me to be part of
it. It was the end of
preseason training in Ballarat and Mick convinced me to train on
Thursday night under lights at North Ballarat's new venue which would
co-inside with the opening on Saturday where
Redan were scheduled against North Ballarat in what promised to be a
block buster. After signing with Redan after training on the Thursday I
was excited about the year ahead however the first game was one to
forget. A 30 goal humiliating loss to The
winters back then were painful, freezing cold and very wet. One round
against Golden Point was actually called off due to too much snow over
night. Ankle deep mud was considered normal. 1994
David Blackburn took over the reins with a much depleted list. Blacky
was also a great coach who I have a lot of respect for and enjoyed a
beer with after the game. Redan Football Club has so many fond memories
for me. The four years I spent with Redan Football Club were a lot of
fun; the footy, the pubs, the balls, the footy trips but most
importantly the friendships that I still have today. |

I started at Redan in 1998 under the tutorage of Marty Cusack. Played with the likes of Bobby O'Brien, Grassy Stone, Rob Hogan, Brad Paatsch and Dan Lee. I'll never forget my first game against Sunbury when we kept them down to about 45 goals. Flogga walked in to the rooms after the match and put a slab on the ground and duly said 'Don't worry boys, we're just one game off top spot and a bit of percentage'. That's
the way it was, met some fantastic blokes at the place and was involved
for about five years. Following through from my initial game against
Sunbury, it was an absolutely awesome feeling to be involved some
capacity and flog them in the 2002 Grand Final. |

I
came across to Redan in 1997 under Matt Jones who was the first of what
would be four senior coaches in my first four seasons. There was a
terrific spirit within the senior side despite our regular losses of
around the 30 goal mark. We failed to win a game that season but I
didn't regret my decision to play with Redan. The next year under Marty
Cusack our results didn't improve and during this season the club almost
folded. The day we didn't have enough players to field a team and
forfeited against Darley was a definite low point. This led to the 'Save
the Lions' campaign which ultimately turned things around for the club
and prevented us from folding. At this time many quality people became
involved with the club and without them the club would not exist today.
The following season under Some of the more memorable times out on the ground would have to be the final match of 1997 playing down at Melton South. They would have been expected to win by at least 30 goals that day but we managed to get within 10 goals which was for us like winning a game. Ian Morell's chant of 'kick it to the rainbow' which had appeared during the last quarter became infectious and I'm sure the opposition were sick of hearing it. We certainly were a team of battlers on the field but you could never question the desire to go out there and give it our all week in week out. |

I played with Redan 1991-1994 approx 60 games. I have a story relating to the Daylesford Football Ground. In 1991 when we played in thick fog throughout the entire game, so much so that you could not see from CHF to FF. Made for a boring game I am sure for all spectators. Funny thing is that Ash Quale still swears he took Mark of the Century on the outer wing only to have nobody see it. I can confirm though the mark was OK. Must be something about Daylesford as I did my knee there on another "shocker of a day" in 1994. |

Playing with Redan although not the most successful time on my not so illustrious football career, was certainly one of the most fun. Despite receiving some significant hidings on the field the same core group of guys stuck together and continued to turn up every week to ensure that the club survived. Off the field the players were all good mates and partied pretty hard, some time to the detriment of on-field performance (although I don't think it would have mattered how hard we partied, the result would have still been a pounding). I can remember many a night at "The Blarney" or the Bunch of Grapes, many of them Thursday nights in fact, in which we went for a quiet drink after training and it ended up huge night with most arriving home in the wee hours of the next morning. Ian Morelli was always up to something and could be relied upon to keep the crew entertained, whether it be with his unique dancing on the dance floor at Hot Gossip or generally with his "out there" antics. Many a time the only time we actually got to sing the Redan theme song was at the Blarney on a Thursday night. Names that come to mind include Ian "Borris" Morelli, Gary Hickey, Bredan "Bobby" O'Brien, Marty Cusack, Nick Heffernan, Adam Pease, Grassy, Justin Catley, Daryl Williams, Robert Hogan, Carlo, and many others. I remember the years at Redan very fondly as a time of a lot of fun with good mates and with a sense of accomplishment in that we were able to help keep the club alive and build a platform for the success it has and is now achieving. |
